I love photographing people and creating drama using strong and contrasting lighting techniques, costumes and location. The photographs need to tell a story to the observer, whether it is a single or part of a series of shots.
The twenty-storyboard images in this series are inspired by movie stills from the film noir and neo-noir genres of the 1940s onwards. I wanted to recreate the melodramatic mood with lighting techniques by using only four small Nikon speedlights fired remotely from my camera with radio-controlled triggers. The photographs were taken over a six-week period in and around the City of Aberdeen in Scotland.
