Once I had a life
This project started out as a desire, a desire named America. Last April, having left for the west of the USA, I let my instincts guide me, giving free rein to my inclination to roam. What I saw - the boarded-up little towns, deserted regions, urban areas subjected to de-industrialisation – not only made America seem abandoned, but secluded in the past. I have attempted to reproduce the American sentiment about their damaged country. The people I met often thought that their new president was going to rebuild the factories, breathing life back into the economy. Rather than judge, I preferred to listen.

I live in a ghost town

Thibaut Derien has traveled all over France, avoiding the main roads, in search of small abandoned but still standing businesses, witnesses of an era, a trade, a fashion, which inspired him this ghost town, which observes impotently the activity of impersonal shopping centers, there, far away. Not so far, in fact. In this cemetery of shops, the curtains are lowered, drawn, the doors sealed, the windows walled. The storefronts choke in a strict, square frame, which eclipses everything else. This frontality reduces the shops to their only facade and reduces to silence what made the particularity of these local shops: the social bond.

From the silent rooms
Belgium 2013. It's been four years since I began to take an interest in the photography of abandoned places. This practice, which tends to become popular in recent years, for the better or the worse, is called Urban Exploration. It quickly became a passion. It pushed me to improve my photographic skills and allowed me to visit many wastelands in Europe. Whether castles, houses, mansions, factories, hospitals, these places provide an atmosphere between life and death, where time seems to have stopped and the traces of a lively past is caught up by his ephemerality. It is not uncommon to find beautiful remains such as musical instruments that I present in this series and that relive momentarily through our camera.

A Dance of Life and Death

Ceremonials reflect the essence of who we are, as humans. Birth, weddings, religious celebrations, death. At all these moments, human emotions and relations are at their paroxysm. There is nothing stronger than the joy of a baby born, or the grief caused by the loss of a loved one. The latter is also an extremely difficult emotion to document through photography. How to approach someone in emotional pain and capture her ? Is it possible to photograph without stealing an emotion? This project is an exploration of the particular ceremonial of death in Ghana. Before retrieving the dead from the mortuary, People chant and dance, weep and scream, all at once, while behind the doors, the embalmer is preparing the body. All human emotions at once, in honor of one man. A peculiar dance of life and death.

Mon confident Bourriquet
I am a “Mom” photographer passionate about the childhood's universe and child photography. I would love to give life through images to the complicity which exists between a child and his comforter. It helps to give life to this toy, immortalize the emotion of this moment and also give life to these everyday images which are offered to me day after day. I offer you poetry and sweetness in the pure state… as a child can see it and feel it in his heart with her confident Eeyore. This accomplice to whom we entrust everything, who protects us from everything, who tells us stories as much as we tell him and who keeps all our secrets because nobody can understand us better that him/her.

Night lights

Passionate amateur photographer, I began practicing photography in 2014. Nature lover and keen on traveling, I naturally moved towards landscape photography. The night is by definition the absence of natural light, produced by an inexhaustible source: the sun. Our eyes do not have the ability to discern details in the dark, and our perception of colors is degraded. However, our cameras sensors can collect the missing information, and let us discover another universe. I would like to share through this series of photographs, an aesthetic and colorful vision of the night taken in different places of the world during travel.

Universalities
Universalities,on one side natural elements of terrestrial origin, aquatic plant, animal, on the other constructions and human transformations related to its activities. In different fields, such as technology, agriculture or art. By assembling these photos I want to show the similarities of forms, movements, compositions, to emphasize Universality thanks to the diptychs that are presented to you. The materials, colors, shapes, none of this is invented because already existing. Yes man transforms, assembles and builds, but he uses only materials existing on our planet or in the universe.

Refuzniks – how to say no to the Israelian army
They are called Tamar, Yaron or Gal, they are students, farmers, postmen or former officers. They live in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem, they are 20, 40 or 60 years old. Between 2007 and 2017, the photographer Martin Barzilai has met several times about fifty of these Israelis called “refuzniks” who refuse, for political or moral reasons, to serve a society militarized to the extreme where the passage by the army is constitutive of citizenship. These refuzniks tell the whole story of Israel, its faults and its contradictions, its plural character. And draw a portrait of a society where everything will have to be rethought to build a less dark future.

Man Next Door
My neighbour Kid was 42 when he died. He regularly swept our shared porch, put out the rubbish and kept an eye on things when I was away. As Kid couldn’t read well, I helped him with his mail. He borrowed my phone whenever he didn’t have any credit on his own. Kid had a turbulent life: he was banned from seeing his son and struggled with alcohol and drug addiction. In the last year of his life, he spent more and more time with drifters and junkies, begging on the street for change.

Soul'étude
The British author born in 1964 was raised on the French Riviera, in German, with a racket in hand. At the same time he will also very early grab, with the other hand, a camera that will become, for years and around the world, his faithfull companion. Of his Homéric quest, he shares here some of the decisive moments : the rise and fall of the most famous german tennis familly (with whom he grew up), his dissolute childhood and his encounter with photography on a path of awakening put to the test by fighting to survive his childhood dreams, become champion, to find his roots and be a good father. Shamelessly and without detours, it is a photographic and spiritual journey of more than fifty years in which the author invites us. Beautiful, inspiring and moving, he manages in sixty minutes to shake the intimate in each one of us while succeeding the delicate marriage between writing and photography.
